The Saucer That Saves the Shelf
Watering is easier when the pot drains properly and the surface beneath it stays protected.

Inspect the pot
Check for a drainage hole and a stable base. If using a decorative outer pot, remove excess water rather than leaving roots in it.
Match the saucer
Use a tray wide enough to catch runoff without tipping. Put a protective barrier under materials that stain or absorb moisture.
Make the check visible
After watering, look back at the saucer and empty standing water as appropriate. Watch the soil and the plant instead of following a rigid calendar.
Can I plant directly in a pot without drainage?
It is harder to manage excess water. A draining inner pot inside the decorative container is usually easier to monitor.
